Yesterday BBC Radio 4’s consumer affairs program You and Yours included an item on LoveFilm.com, the online DVD rental and movie streaming service. It included an interview with the company’s CEO Simon Calver, as well as myself talking about the popularity of the site. You can listen to the interviews on iPlayer here, but I thought that I’d share some of the key finding on the blog:
• Since taking over Amazon’s DVD rental business in early 2008, UK internet traffic to LoveFilm.com has increase by 150%.
• LoveFilm.com is now one the top 100 websites in the UK, and last month the 11th most popular online retailer (putting it ahead of a number of big names including: B&Q, ASOS, Apple, Top Shop, Currys, and HMV).
• It is also the second most visited movie website in the UK after IMDB.
• LoveFilm.com is particularly popular with young professionals and therefore receives much of its traffic from London and other big cities such as Manchester and Glasgow.
• Unlike most other retailers it isn’t particularly reliant on search engines for traffic (they account for just one-fifth of visits vs. two-fifths for a typical retailer).
• Instead, other key sources of visits are social networks (it is the 8th most popular retailer visited after Facebook), email and entertainment websites – with much of the former traffic coming via advertising, affiliates and refer a friend schemes.

A cool green action car that can shoot powder-filled capsules is among the toys most likely to fly off the shelves this Christmas, retailers said today.
Kevin Levin’s DX Action Cruiser, from the Ben 10 Alien Force by Bandai, is one of 12 toys highlighted by the Toy Retailers Association (TRA) as one of their Dream Dozen for 2009.
TRA chairman Gary Grant said the industry had “turned the latest trends into innovative and creative toys” for Christmas.
“The list also reveals a trend towards nostalgic characters and brands which have been updated with a modern twist,” he said.
“Consumers are reverting back to heritage brands which will last longer than the Christmas season.”
The Dream Dozen includes Monopoly City, a modern-take on the traditional boardgame, cute hamsters from Go Go Pets and a multimedia digital camera.
The TRA also compiled separate “dream dozen” lists for the girls’, boys’, pre-school, games, construction and creative categories.
Animals will dominate the girls’ wish-list, with the Go Go Pets Hamsters, Pony in My Pocket Pony Arena, FurReal Friends Lulu my Cuddlin’ Kitty and Fluffy goes Walkies all featuring in the top 12, the TRA said.
Animagic Peanut My Playful Pup, marketed as “the closest you can get to having your very own real-life puppy”, is also expected to be among the best-sellers.
Dolls are also expected to be popular, with relative newcomers such as Baby Annabell 2009, Sally Doll, and Cicciobello Love ’n’ Care going up against traditional favourites including Barbie & The Three Musketeers Corinne Doll and the Sylvanian Families.
For boys, fast cars and battle sets are expected to fly off the shelves as parents snap up the likes of the Ben 10 Alien Force cruiser, the GX Racers, which can be sent across tightropes to perform stunts, and the Battle Strikers starter set.
Star Wars and Transformers action figures are also expected to be key features of Christmas stockings this year.
For pre-school children, much-loved faces like Thomas the Tank Engine and Postman Pat will be as popular as ever, while the Waybuloo Peeka Lau Lau offers youngsters the chance to play peeka as if they were on the CBeebies programme.
The KidiZoom Multimedia Digital Cameras from VTech will appeal to budding photographers while the snoring Night Night Timmy is expected to be popular at bedtime.
Monopoly City, Jenga and Rubiks 360 are touted as potential best-sellers in the games category while Star Wars dominates the construction category with its Echo Base and Darth Vader’s Tie Fighter.
And for the budding creative-types, Doodle with Glo Doodle, a reusable glow-in-the-dark surface, and the Crayola Glo-Station will be among the must-have toys, as is the Let’s Cook Fruit Factory which enables children to turn fruit into juice, smoothies or ice cream.

Dan Brown’s (Digital Fortress, Deception Point) eagerly anticipated new novel, The Lost Symbol, is the third to feature Harvard University symbologist Robert Langdon, following 2000′s Angels & Demons and 2003′s The Da Vinci Code. The best-selling author is an international phenomenon with over 81 million copies currently in print and is published in 51 languages around the globe. If Hollywood sources are to be believed, The Lost Symbol is all set to be turned into a blockbuster movie, just like Ron Howard’s (A Beautiful Mind) adaptations of The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons starring Tom Hanks (Forest Gump) as the intrepid hero Robert Langdon. Keep your eye out for a possible 2012 release date!
Six years in the writing, The Lost Symbol is Dan Brown’s extraordinary sequel to his internationally bestselling Robert Langdon thrillers, Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code . Nothing is ever what it first appears in a Dan Brown novel. Set over a breathtaking 12 hour time span, the book’s narrative takes the reader on an exhilarating journey through a masterful and unexpected landscape as Professor of Symbology, Robert Langdon, is once again called into action. Expertly researched and written with breakneck pace, The Lost Symbol once again demonstrates why Dan Brown is the world’s bestselling thriller writer
